چکیده

Nowadays atomic optical lattice clocks can perform frequency measurements with a fractional uncertainty at the 10 level in few hours of measurement, outperforming the best caesium (Cs) standards operated in the world. Since the definition of the unit of time is based on Cs, a worldwide debate about the need to promote the redefinition of the second on a optical reference is under-way. At INRIM (Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica) we developed an optical lattice clock based on ytterbium atoms and compared it against a Cs fountain. These results are an important contribution to the debate.

When should we change the definition of the second?

The microwave caesium (Cs) atomic clock has formed an enduring basis for the second in the International System of Units (SI) over the last few decades. The advent of laser cooling has underpinned the development of cold Cs fountain clocks, which now achieve frequency uncertainties of approximately 5×10(-16). Since 2000, optical atomic clock research has quickened considerably, and now challeng...

Transportable Optical Lattice Clock with 7×10^{-17} Uncertainty.

We present a transportable optical clock (TOC) with ^{87}Sr. Its complete characterization against a stationary lattice clock resulted in a systematic uncertainty of 7.4×10^{-17}, which is currently limited by the statistics of the determination of the residual lattice light shift, and an instability of 1.3×10^{-15}/sqrt[τ] with an averaging time τ in seconds. Measurements confirm that the syst...

Colloquium: Physics of optical lattice clocks

Recently invented and demonstrated optical lattice clocks hold great promise for improving the precision of modern time keeping. These clocks aim at the 10 18 fractional accuracy, which translates into a clock that would neither lose nor gain a fraction of a second over an estimated age of the Universe. In these clocks, millions of atoms are trapped and interrogated simultaneously, dramatically...

A clock network for geodesy and fundamental science

Leveraging the unrivalled performance of optical clocks as key tools for geo-science, for astronomy and for fundamental physics beyond the standard model requires comparing the frequency of distant optical clocks faithfully. Here, we report on the comparison and agreement of two strontium optical clocks at an uncertainty of 5 × 10(-17) via a newly established phase-coherent frequency link conne...

Entanglement and spin squeezing in a network of distant optical lattice clocks

We propose an approach for the collective enhancement of precision for remote optical lattice clocks and a way of generating the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) state of remote clocks. In the first scenario, a distributed spin-squeezed state (SSS) of M clocks is generated by a collective optical quantum nondemolition measurement on clocks with parallel Bloch vectors. Surprisingly, optical losses,...
